"Kashi" is an ongoing project documenting the people whose lives revolve around and alongside the holy Ganges river in Varanasi, India. Varanasi, also sometimes referred to by its ancient name Kashi, is one of the holiest places in Hinduism. Many Hindus make the long pilgrimage to this holy city to have their remains burned on the banks of the Ganges River. Despite being one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world, its face is rapidly changing and the essence of the city is threatened by political leaders who want to “modernize” it by all means.
“Kashi” is an attempt to freeze time, before it slips away, carrying with it all that once was. It’s a tribute to the beautiful chaos, the incessant coming and going, but also the stillness, the peace. The vibrant life in a city where people go to die. The dignity and beauty of its people: boatmen, saddhus, beggars, workers, priests.
